Welcome to Rochester, MI!

Located in prestigious Oakland County, Michigan, north of metro Detroit, the city of Rochester is bounded to the north, south and west by the city of Rochester Hills. Often, the Rochester Area is described to include the areas of Rochester, Rochester Hills, and Oakland Township. With a wonderful downtown, beautiful parks, trails and green space, abundant shopping and award winning schools, Rochester is a great place to live. It was ranked in the "top 100 best places to live" by Relocate America.

In 2008, the US Census Bureau estimated the population of the city of Rochester to be approximately 11,002, the city of Rochester Hills to be 69,014, and Oakland Township to be 16,270. As shown on the US Census bureau website, the population has grown over the last decade. With an average commute time of 30 minutes or less, neighboring cities such as Auburn Hills, Shelby Township, and Troy are easily accessible with M-59 going east and west, and I-75 going north and south through the area.

Rochester History

Rochester has a strong heritage. The city of Rochester was named from Rochester, New York, and its history dates back to 1817 when the first settler, James Graham, settled along Paint Creek. You can visit the Van Hoosen farm which was founded in 1823, now listed in the National Register of Historical Places, and preserved through the Rochester Hills Museum in Rochester Hills. In 1837, Michigan became the 26th state, and the village of Rochester was formed in 1869. Separating from Avon Township, the village became a city in 1966. Then in 1984, Avon Township became the city of Rochester Hills.
